Memories of two destructive Earthquakes
19 April 1955 – Epicenter: Kato Lehonia – Volos – 6.2 Richter degrees.

A few months before the earthquake, a new thermal spring appeared on the ridge of mount Pelion, between the villages Agios Lavredios and Agios Georgios. This was practically speaking, the epicenter. Right after the earthquake, the spring dried up.Today the place is visible from at least 50 km away, as it is an enormous area without trees. Local people have named it "sarah", which means devastated place. Moreover, Pagasitikos Gulf was full of tuna and, for this reason, this kind of fish was very cheap. Some days before the earthquake the tuna disappeared from the gulf. |

9 June 1980 - Epicenter: the sea area near Almiros, 45 km south-west of Volos – 6.3 Richter.
Since January 1980, there were some earthquakes ranging from 4R to 4.8 R. The last minor earthquake occurred 18 hours before the main one. On the eve of the large-scale earthquake, I was at Koropi beach, which is on the coast opposite to Almiros. The sky was totally unclouded. As the sun was setting behind the epicenter, the horizon turned bright orange. It was very impressive.
One more impression
6 August 1983 - Epicenter: the sea area near Agios Efstratios island – North Aegean– 7.3 Richter degrees.
On the eve of the earthquake, I noticed that a large number of small cockroaches were leaving the fields in an endless line.
