Austin, Texas is a distinctively vital, creative, and diverse community
in the heart of the Lone Star State, a place where politics, arts, and
culture are as elemental as air, water, and the big Texas sky. The Austin
Chronicle is the keen-eyed and eloquent voice of that city, expressing the
community's political and environmental concerns, and exploring and
supporting Austin's active cultural scene. Over the years, the Chronicle has
grown to a weekly readership of more than 265,600 in the Austin metropolitan
area, publishing approximately 140-170 tabloid-size pages a week. Between
the covers, we offer incisive political coverage, discerning and informed
cultural reporting and commentary.
But the Chronicle not only reflects the heart and soul of the community it
serves in its editorial pages; it also puts its muscle where its mouth is by
sponsoring such events as the South by Southwest (SXSW) Music & Media
Conference, Film Conference, and Multimedia Festival, and presenting the
annual Austin Music Awards Show and the Austin Hot Sauce Contest (the
world's largest), along with countless other promotional events.

The Austin Film Society, celebrating 20 years in 2005, promotes the
appreciation of film and supports creative filmmaking. It screens rarely
seen films with its Essential Cinema and Texas Documentary Tour film series;
gives grants through the Texas Filmmaker’s Production Fund and offers other
support to emerging filmmakers; and provides access and education about film
to youth and the public.
Through Austin Studios, which AFS opened in 2000 in partnership with the
City of Austin, AFS helps attract film development and production to Austin
and Texas. With its more than 100,000 square feet of production space in
five former airplane hangars, Austin Studios has brought in more than $165
million in direct expenditure from 50 productions, including 17 feature
films such as FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, MAN OF THE HOUSE and THE WENDELL BAKER
STORY.
Film premieres and the annual Texas Film Hall of Fame Awards raise funds as
well as awareness of the impact of film on economy and community. The Austin
Film Society is ranked among the top film centers in the country and
recognized by the Nation Endowment for the Arts and Directors Guild of
America.

Born in Texas with roots a decade old, Grande Communications is a
Texas-based communications company providing residential and business
customers with high-speed Internet, local and long-distance telephone and
digital cable services over a single network. Grande is building this new,
high capacity, fiber-optic network from the ground up, using the latest
technological advancements in broadband communications.
We're changing the way Texans communicate with:
High-speed Internet access up to 100 times faster than dial-up service
Clear, reliable local and long-distance telephone service
Analog and digital cable entertainment, including access to over 300 channels
Wireless home security designed to secure you, your family and your home
"Fiber to the curb" technology, which connects, on average, no more than 24
homes to a broadband line, versus the 500 homes that share bandwidth on other
service providers' lines
One call and one bill for all services
Grande is the first broadband company in the region to build such a network
from the ground up and the first to offer service in Austin, San Antonio and
San Marcos. Grande believes its customers find value not only in better
service and cost savings, but also in the convenient one call for customer
service and one itemized bill.
Grande, which is already building a high-speed broadband network along the
Austin/San Antonio I-35 corridor, also provides similar services to customers
in 18 additional franchise cities, including Corpus Christi, Midland, Odessa,
Waco, and communities north of Dallas which gives Grande a total of 48
franchises since the company was founded in December 1999.
In addition to its growing fiber-optic network, Grande also provides DSL
high-speed Internet, dial-up access and local and long-distance telephone
service to several communities and apartment complexes in the Houston area.
These "off network" telephone and data services are also being rolled out to
many other cities across Texas.
Grande Communications also operates a wholesale services division, Grande
Networks, which sells a variety of network services to top national and
competitive telecommunications companies.
Grande Communications, a company founded, managed and operated by Texans,
offers an expansive broadband network derived from the latest in
communications technology that is perfectly suited to deliver a full range of
communications and information services. The Grande executive team is
committed to a set of values that makes Grande the kind of company employees
want to work for, and the kind of company their neighbors trust with their
business.

Largely via word-of-mouth, Indie911 has quickly evolved into one of the
most popular independent music destinations on the Internet. Thousands of
music listeners are discovering great new music every day with a FREE and
LEGAL system that features the very BEST independent music. Our very exciting
Film Division is just launching at this 2005 SXSW!
What does Indie911 do?
We are all about great music and film and empowering creative and business
independence!
Indie911 is breaking outdated music industry molds by supplying listeners with
the best new music to discover for free while giving artists a groundbreaking
platform and tools to thrive independently in today’s new music economy.
How?
By paying artists for their online radio “airplay,” licensing fees and sales.
How does it work?
Listeners listen for free. We charge a base fee to our labels and artists to
cover our bandwidth and storage costs if they choose to go above a free
account and host more than a couple of songs. There’s no obligation to upgrade
from a free account. However, paying members are eligible to receive royalties
based on indie911 “airplay”. The more people listen, the more artists get
paid. It’s that simple.
Who created indie911?
A dedicated and experienced team of professionals led by industry veteran
Justin Goldberg developed indie911. The company has agreements with leading
artist services companies including Market Wire, Music2Deal, ASCAP, Song &
Film.com, Live 365, Music Industry Network Canada, CD Forge, The USA
Songwriting Competition, The DIY Festival, and A&R Online. Goldberg has held
executive positions with Sony Music, Tonos, Riffage, and Laundry Room Records.
A well-known advocate for independent artists, he has worked with such varied
artists as Martin Sexton, Dee Dee Ramone, Dave Grohl and Willie Nelson.
Goldberg is also the author of the critically acclaimed music industry book,
"The Ultimate Guide to the NEW Music Industry: Handbook for Hell," published

Accessible design is universal design.
For the one in five people who will experience a disabling condition at some
time in their lives, information technology can level the playing field,
providing education, employment, and a wealth of human resources. But this
opportunity is realized only if technology is designed to be accessible.
Accessibility creates real benefits for business, government and education:
• A recent study estimated that accessible technology benefits more than 60%
of the general public.
• Accessibility enhances the growing use of wireless connections.
• Fifty million Americans have a disability, and that number increases as the
population ages.
• Fortune magazine estimates the aggregate income of Americans with
disabilities to be over $1 trillion – a growing market.
• The U.S. Department of Commerce reports that people with disabilities still
have less access to technology and have seen less improvement in status than
any other group.
• State and federal governments recognize the need for technology access, and
have issued accessibility mandates.
For over six years, Knowbility has led national initiatives to improve
technology access. Knowbility pursues its mission through three sets of
award-winning services:
• Public Awareness – including our award-winning Accessibility Internet Rally
• Community Technology Programs – help teachers, parents and school
administrators learn how to use assistive technology in classroom settings to
improve outcomes for students with disabilities.
• Assessment and consulting services – including accessibility audits to
ensure compliance with Section 508 and other accessibility standards and
mandates.
Knowbility programs have been recognized for excellence and innovation from
the Peter Drucker Foundation, the US Department of Labor, and many others.

Location scouts are always pleasantly surprised to learn that New Mexico
can double for many other states and urban cities around the country. During
the filming of “Elvis Has Left The Building,” the state of New Mexico doubled
for Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas, Nevada, Arizona and New York City. Our diverse
landscape is what makes filming here so unique; drive thirty minutes in one
direction to film on barren tribal land and thirty minutes in another
direction for lush green farm land along the Rio Grande. Call the New Mexico
Film Office at 800-545-9871 and we will be happy to assist you with your
location scout.
New Mexico has always been known for its beautiful weather and scenery but
within the entertainment industry we are becoming better known for our
financial incentives:
1) Investment Program: New Mexico offers up to 7.5 million in interest-free
loans for film & television projects.
2) 15% Income Tax Rebate: Filmmakers are eligible for a New Mexico income tax
rebate equal to 15% of their total New Mexico production costs.
3) Sales Tax Exemption: A filmmaker can apply for a sales tax exemption while
working in the State.
4) Wage Reimbursement for Training: Companies can qualify for a 50% wage
reimbursement for hiring qualified film trainees.
5) Fee-Free Use of State Buildings: Several hundred state buildings are
available for filming or office space at no cost.

Podcasting has been designated as one of the hottest new Internet
technologies of 2005 and Podcast Networks is the premiere company dedicated to
servicing the needs of this exciting new marketplace.
Podcasting is DIY broadcasting that turns mp3 players into the transistor
radio of the 21st century. Podcasting allows mp3 player owners to subscribe
online to audio shows called podcasts. By doing so they create their own
time-shifted personalized radio station they can take wherever they go and
listen to whenever they want. Podcasting also takes the power of the
broadcaster and places it in reach of everyone, allowing you to become a
broadcast mogul of the 21st century.
By the end of 2005 some 60 million mp3 players will be on the streets of
America. These millions of mp3 listeners are spending less and less of their
time listening to traditional broadcasts. Podcasting (re)connects you with
these valuable listeners and Podcast Networks helps you do it. For listeners,
Podcast Networks operates the central podcast directory at www.podcast.net
offering you a variety of ways to easily find and subscribe to the audio
content you desire most. For content producers, Podcast Networks offers the

SecureCastle.com is an independent third party processor for micro payment
and digital rights management (DRM) services.
SecureCastle.com, a global website and Internet Payment Processing System, is
designed to enable customers to pay pennies for digital information and help
the online merchants/owner control the usage of the content and collect small
fees at a profit for purchase amounts not suitable for credit cards.
This seamless and inexpensive alternative to selling both digital and hard
good products on the web is made available through SecureCastle.com’s Self
Authorizing Digital Content (SADC) technology. No development is required by
the web site to handle payments. The content selected for purchase by the
users invokes the SecureCastle.com payment system to secure authorization and
control its usage.
Purchases of products through SecureCastle.com are authorized against a
“virtual card” funded by the users upon securing a SecureCastle.com account.
This allows SecureCastle.com to charge the merchant/owner a small percent of
the purchase amount versus the heavy credit card fees normally encountered.
The net proceeds for handling the payment and license are automatically
transferred from the users account to that of the merchant/owner’s account.
Use of SecureCastle.com’s services only requires the merchant/owner to create
the content and make it available to their customers via a web site.
SecureCastle.com handles the rest.

Why is this important? Because other wireless networks use a patchwork of

St. Edward’s University is Austin’s premier private university. There’s an
energy at St. Edward’s that few universities can match. And its new MBA
concentration in Digital Media Management proves it.
The program explores the convergence of digital technology, the arts and
business in Austin — home to some of the industry’s most prominent digital
media companies and the South by Southwest Music, Film and Interactive
Conferences and Festivals — so graduates can excel in the marketplace.
The two-year concentration in the MBA degree is fast-paced and intense. It’s a
full-time, daytime program. There are two seven-week sessions each fall and
spring semester, and students take three courses each seven weeks. During the
summer session between the first and second year, they complete an eight-week
internship.
The program explores every field in the digital realm — music, film,
interactive media — and business. Students expand their knowledge of digital
media and entertainment while they hone core business competencies. They
complete an immersion program consulting for a real-world multimedia
enterprise. They also present a business plan to professors, financing
professionals, media executives and business leaders.
And each year, students have a platinum pass to SXSW (it’s included in the
tuition) so they can attend and network at all of the film, music and digital
presentations and events.

Founded by student and independent filmmakers, The Flux (www.theflux.tv)
aims to become the crossroads for student filmmakers and their audience. The
site offers the largest single resource page for filmmakers, as well as movie
hosting services, and the always entertaining weekly webcast. Hosts Josh and
Anna Steffen take a light hearted look at the world of student and independent
short films each week.
The site was founded by Ryan Ritchey, an independent film producer in
Philadelphia. "Making my own short films, I know it can be a challenge to
promote your work, find an audience, and find the resources to grow as a
filmmaker. We want our site to help bridge the gap," Ritchey said.
With thousands of student projects created each year, it can be easy for
projects to fall through the cracks. "There are other, larger websites with
lots of movies; so many movies that it is difficult to be heard above the
noise," Ritchey said.
While the vast resource section of the site is intended to help indie
filmmakers, the highlight for film viewers is the weekly webcast. Each show
features tech tips, actor/director interviews, and shorts. Filmmakers will
want to bookmark this site.
The Flux also features hundreds of film reviews, all exclusive to the site.
The Flux is also experimenting with groundbreaking content delivery for cell
phones and the iPod.
After a hugely succesful beta test in 2003, the site will officially launch at
SXSW this year.

The Xiph.Org Foundation is best known for the Ogg Project, a complete
multimedia file and streaming system. Over the past ten years,
Xiph.Org independently developed and implemented the technology behind
the Ogg system, including Ogg's codec and streaming techniques. Ogg
is the only complete digital media system free for unrestricted public
and commercial use, just like email, the Web and the Internet itself.
Today, individual artists and multi-billion dollar companies use Ogg
for everything from broadcasting music over internet radio to audio
and video in gaming software to VoIP systems. Businesses choose Ogg
for quality, interoperability, portability, and ease of implementation
even when the cost of licensing a proprietary solution is not a
concern.
In addition to Ogg, Xiph.Org is known for software packages related to
Ogg or media technology in general, such as the Icecast streaming
server, the Postfish audio postprocessor, and the Cdparanoia CDDA
audio extraction tool.
The Xiph.Org Foundation is a registered 501c3 charitable non-profit
organization chartered for the purpose of researching, developing and
maintaining open, royalty-free media interchange standards and
software. As part of our Foundation's mandate, Xiph holds no trade
secrets and uses only patent-free techniques. The Foundation's
software meets all requirements of the Open Source Software definition
as published by the Open Source Initiative.
Xiph.Org is funded entirely through contributions from the general
public. Compared to the cost of licensing proprietary technologies,
relatively small donations allow us to continue producing standards
and software that place no restrictions [or royalty fees] on artists
and businesses.
