The Native Elder Health Care Resource Center (NEHCRC), initially funded by the Administration on Aging for a four-year period beginning February 1, 1994, is a national resource center for older American Indians, Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians, with special emphasis on culturally competent health care. The NEHCRC also is located in the Department of Psychiatry. There are four cross-cutting themes to the Center's efforts: ascertaining health status and conditions, improving practice standards, increasi g access to care, and mobilizing community resources. Diverse organizational assets are integrated to create a thematically consistent, population-specific, and multi-component program led by experienced, prominent Native faculty. Telecommunications and print media are employed to increase awareness of and access to program activities, NEHCRC faculty, information resources, and fellow participants. Seven research projects (each 12 months long) consistent with program themes are pursued to encourage replic tion and extension into related areas of study.
