Topic 18 of 105: Kathie Lee

Tue, Apr 21, 1998 (07:21) | Paul Terry Walhus (terry)
Pity poor Kathie Lee! Between her daily show with Reege, her cruise line
ads, and doting over her two young children ("Cod-eeeee!"), she just
can't find the time to host the Miss America pageant anymore. In fact,
she's had such an exhausting schedule that she didn't even notice she was
running a sweatshop the likes of which would make Leona Helmsley blush.
Of course, once it was brought to her attention, Kathie Lee was
devastated. She preceded to use her show as a soapbox to defend herself
and threaten those who seeked to expose her. Shame on them! How could
they dare to question the integrity of America's favorite gal?

So shocked was Kathie Lee that she sent her hubby, Frank, to go pay off
the undocumented immigrants who worked 60 hours a week to make 50,000
blouses for her Wal-Mart clothing line. Apparently, Kathie Lee was still
too choked up to appear herself and somehow decided 300 bucks apiece
would suitably quell her conscience. How 'bout the Honduran kids making
32 cents a day, eh Kathie Lee?

Really, Kathie Lee's run to the aid of these vicimized garment workers
is about as believable as OJ's quest for the real killers. Did she think
$9.99 blouses grew on trees? I can't even get a bag of tube socks for
that! Wal-Mart made $300 million on those things and Kathie Lee got about
$10 mil of that. Either she's doing some serious damage control or she's
as big an idiot as we all thought she was.

No Kathie Lee, the world is not made up of hearts, diamonds, and clover
(unless of course you live in a box of Lucky Charms). And you're not in
Kansas anymore.

"The premiss -- and only in Kathie Lee's sick and twisted alternative
universe would a Christmas special need a premiss -- is that Kathie Lee
and Frank and their demonic spawn are spending their Christmas at the
family compound in Vail and that they invite all their Hollywood pals
like Aaron Neville and Andy Williams to spend the holidays the Kathie Lee
way. Because what successful celebrity wouldn't want to spend Christmas
locked in a cabin with Kathie Lee Gifford?"

This is a still from
the historic day (8/26/97)
that Frank Gifford joined
Kathie Lee live on Live!
with Regis & Kathie Lee.
This was their first
appearance together since
Frank's videotaped
fling with Suzen Johnson.
Cody came on stage first to a
loud round of applause, and Frank got a
nice welcome too. Frank really didn't
say much because he was only on for
a minute, and Cody was getting all
the attention as usual, but Frank did
manage to get in a plug for the
first Monday Night Football game on
September 1st.

Kathie Lee Gifford

We all know Kathie Lee. She's the evil bitch who hosts that crappy
morning talk show with that devil
spawn Regis. However, the South Park residents were more than happy to
let Kathie Lee into their humble
burg; She is a celebrity after all. Chef was the most excited to have her
come by. I would think that Kathie
Lee enjoyed her little stay in South Park. I mean, she did survive an
assassination attempt and got to score with Chef (That's the
way to show Frank!)

certainly not an adherent of hers, or anything... just
vaguely know who she is at all, actually... BUT...
doesn't it seem a little unfair- the criticism (and the
seeming virulence attached to it)? why is michael jordan
(or any of the other nike whores, but ESP. jordan) not
excoriated for the millions (and millions and millions)
lining his pockets, from the sweat of foreign people (often
children) from foreign lands, etc...? seems a lot worse, to me-
and i've never heard of one 14 year-old killing another to
steal his-or-her kathie lee jumper, have you?

She's sure putting out more effort than Michael to deal with the
situation. I just put these statements out to stir up controversy, and
these certainly don't reflect my views in any way.

Now that I've regained my composure from ROTFLOL, I have to say that I'm actually a (cough) admirer of all that Kathie Lee Gifford has done for various causes and charities and consider her a refreshing human specimen compared with the rest of TV-land. Not that I could ever watch her talk show (or any talk show for that matter, besides "Loveline").

from a Redbook article:

Her life may seem like an open book, but after a decade as America's
favorite (and most open) talk show host, Mrs. Frank Gifford reveals
something she's been keeping all to herself.
BY MEREDITH BERKMAN

Kathie Lee Gifford cannot stop crying.

It's minutes after 10 A.M. and Gifford has just finished taping a show in
which she's plucked a fur ball out of cohost Regis Philbin's ear,
gossiped about son Cody, and discoursed on the length of her underarm
hair. Now, perched on a swivel chair in her small dressing room in
midtown Manhattan, she has unexpectedly shifted gears: She's talking
about the civil war in Bosnia.

"Sometimes I walk in here so depressed," she says in a tear-choked voice,
clutching a balled-up tissue. "The other day I was at my house, and [my
daughter] Cassidy was running down the hill in her little summer frock,
with her little bare toes, you know? And Cody was doing cannonballs into
the pool. And I had just seen a picture in Time or Newsweek of a child
less than Cody's age on crutches because his little leg had been blown off."

Kathie Lee pauses for a long moment, looking around the room. She is
still wearing her on-air dress, an elegant gray wool by Escada. The
coordinating gold-and-diamond earrings are lying on her vanity table,
which is lined with several family photographs.

"It kills me," she whispers finally, barely able to speak. "It affects me
to the point that--that I am so ashamed sometimes to be a human being."

...
