Hello Wolf!

Could anyone explain why and for what use one need`s a tea-mill. I bought one at a fleemarket,because it looked so nice, but I don't know what to use it for.Why should one grind tea?

Oh, and a magpie is a bird that collects shiny things.

i don't know....hmmm....grind coffee beans, maybe....as a child, my mom had a coffee mill that sat on top of the fridge. don't think we ever used it.

it could just be a decorator item, you know, to add atmosphere or something

I am guessing that if it is old, it dates from when tea was sold in whole leaves, and the mill course-ground it for tea ball steeping. If it is modern, I will hit the books in the morning. Hi Isabel!

So, what do we have here - a crowd of the WORST mish moshers (from German Mischmasch, mixed-up, assorted stuff, no?) of the whole Spring! Plus an innocent new Springizen...

New - yes, innocent? - no!

The teamill looks like it is fifties or sixties style, maybe they sold tea in whole leaves then? It has nearly the shape of an hourglass (that thing with the sand in it?), it's black plastic with a stainless steel lid and crank. In the middle it's clear plastic with a scale... I don't no were I have it since last moving. If I find it again, I'll try to scan it for you. It looks nearly like spice mills you can buy nowadays, maybe I could use it for dried herbs?

Have been at a fleemarket today and bought a wonderful collier with glittering stones - the ones, that look like diamonds, but are just glass? Swarowski-crystals? Darn, how are they called? It's just beautiful, tough!

Where are there flea markets with such lovely things for sale? Here, all of the stuff looks like it should have been thrown away in the first place!!!

I guess the ones in London are pretty good too, esp Petticoat Lane. Some times they become the victims of their own success and the things they offer for saye
are freshly minted antiques for sale to the unwary, or real stuff with very high prices. Delighted to know of your good ones, and more than a little jealous of your access to such good "stuff". I still want to know where Isabel found a
Swarovsky crystal collar ... I am visiting that place!!!

It's not the REAL thing, I mean it's not made by Swarovsky...I just know no other word for those cut glass-stones.

But you may find them on every fleemarket... There's always somebody selling old jewellery, with the occasional new piece among that.(mostly fancy and glitzy stuff; for real jewellery, like gold and precious stones, you have to go to antique markets and have loads of money!)

costume jewellry, yup.....i don't know what to think about some of the gaudy pieces i've seen being sold as antiques!

alex, mish mosh has always been in my vocabulary but i don't know where i got it--most probably from oma and opa!!

So you have German grandparents?

There are many traders, that tell hourlong stories about what it's supposed to be - but sometimes it's just crap they tell. But if you keep looking around, and keep asking people, you get an eye for things and learn a lot (It never harms to ask, even if you can't afford it: be honest and tell them you can't afford it, but you like to know what it is, maybe because you haven't seen something like this before...A good dealer will tell you)
I also can't afford REAL antiques, that cost REAL money...

isabel, i'm half german (mom is full-blooded)...don't speak the language anymore, but can pick up what is being said.

Definitely use that teamill for dried spices. I used a little electric coffee mill for the same thing - but it messes it up for further use for coffee! (Which is ok - I do not grind my own!)

hmmm....i usually buy my spices already chopped up. we've (i say we, but actually the alpha male) only just started buying fresh herbs like cilantro and parsley.

Thanks for your tip, if I ever find that darn teamill again, besides the other thousand things I miss since I moved, I'll try it.

Besides, I startet grinding my coffee fresh every day and brew it with hot water about two or three years ago. It tastes wonderful and I can't drink machine-made coffee anymore, brr!

I buy my coffee at a small coffee-roasterie. (Is that the right word in english? Don't know exactly...)

speaking of mish mosh, just came out of my daughter's room and man, can't believe she has all that stuff! and what's worse, none of that can be categorized as mish mosh, either! AND i'm responsible for giving her all that stuff.

That's one reason why I'm here at spring - improve my english - maybe I've lost it with the other stuff under my bed or behind the cupboards or it's still packed up in boxes in the basement (ooops, I don't have one!).
