It makes sense that the watershed is the most basic natural division of the land,
but it is certainly not the most obvious. In this area, lifezones are the most
obvious divisions of the land. One can drive along the foothills and miss the
watershed boundaries, but there is no mistaking going from plains to foothills to
high country.
These musings lead to the second step in the bioregional approach. After coming to
appreciate our particular place, bioregionalists suggest that we begin to see the
place where we live as part of a larger region with its own characteristics, capable
of sustaining us along with particular communities of species, human community with
distinctive activities and culture.
