sad, sad news...
I spent yesterday (my day off!) in doctors offices and the "voice of reason" went off the deep end IMO when she recommended I give up all caffeine (including chocolate) I am in mourning and think I shall drown my sorrows in a double cap!

Honestly... seems like I am high risk for breast cancer with relatives on both maternal and paternal sides having dealt with it. "Studies" link breast cancer to high fat and high caffeine diets... I asked whether it was the high fat diet or people with high body fat percentages were at risk (because I'm definitely one but not the other) she said her recommendation was to lower fat AND eliminate caffeine.
I'm trying to find that 'fine' line between healthy and happy.

My health is valuable to me but if I am forced to cut out something I enjoy very much... well yesterday I couldn't (did not try to) resist a bit of semi-sweet chocolate BUT I did buy new decaf teas and am still drinking decaf coffee. Because I don't eat meat, my fat consumption is pretty much from dairy and the HDL cholesterols I get in olives and avocados. I again, refuse to give up some seemingly simple pleasures (like REAL cheese) but I will try to use more olive oil instead of butter in my cooking.
If someone made it a dare, of course I COULD do it. But do I want to?

I'm hyper-sensitive to caffeine (no snickering, WER!!) but I've recently found a fun and effective way to counteract it if'n I drink it too late at night and NEED to go to sleep. Valerian root and Melatonin produce quite the synergistic effect (in me, anyway) and have the added effect of producing some truly _funky_ dreams!
Then I'm all well-rested in the AM for mo' coffee, mo' coffee, MO'!

Coffee with Drambuie
Who can resist the smooth silky texture of this delicious
liqueur - Drambuie - a recipe gifted to The Mackinnons of
Strathaird by Bonnie Prince Charlie. As a fugitive in Skye
while fleeing from the English forces, Bonnie Prince
Charlie took refuge with the Mackinnons on Skye who offered
him shelter. In return for their hospitality, he gave them
this recipe for his own liqueur. Still made to this day
from that secret recipe based on whisky, Drambuie is THE
liqueur of Scotland.
Ingredients:
-1 measure of Drambuie
-1 - 2 teaspoons soft brown sugar
-pot of strong coffee
-double cream
To serve - Warm for each serving a "comfortable to hold"
stemmed glass or glazed stemmed goblet. Put in the
Drambuie, stir in the brown sugar and fill with coffee to
one inch below the rim. Stir until the sugar is completely
dissolved, then pour the cream over the back of a silver
(if possible) teaspoon so that it floats on the surface. Do
not stir again.

Rich coffee lovers are going crazy for a new kind of coffee, made from the coffee beans that have been through the alimentary canal of the Indonesian monkeys. You can get a cup of such coffee in exclusive American cafes for five dollars. Mark Mauntanos, an importer of this expensive product advised, about 230 kilos of this coffee is delivered to the world market during a year. Experts say, the people of Indonesia have known such a drink for hundreds of years. They noticed that the monkeys, which live in the palm-woods in Sumatra and Java eat coffee beans, but do not digest them. The Europeans, who studied the nature of the most developed apes stated that they selected only the best coffee beans, which went through their intestines undigested.

Ack! As a vegetarian, I'm not sure how I feel about drinking that! Looking forward to bringing back loads of fresh beans from our trip to Costa Rica next month. I'm hoping to do all my Xmas shopping at the cafe!

6. Best Coffee Made From Monkey Poo; Crappuccino
Daily Star
Wed Nov 21 2001 10:22:30 ET Coffee drinkers are going bananas
over a brew that's made of MONKEY DUNG.
Brits are flooding exclusive US stockists with orders for the
brew, called Kopi Luwak, made from berries that have passed
through the digestive system of Indonesian monkeys. Unlucky
coffee plantation staff have to search through the dung to
gather the bizarre "harvest" of coffee berries, which are said
to emerge virtually intact.
Experts reckon the monkey business gives the drink a unique
"earthy" taste, which has made it the most expensive and sought-
after coffee in the world.
It is in such short supply - just 500 lb of it is harvested a
year - that it is virtually impossible to get hold of in Britain
and has only limited availability in the States and Japan.
Experts say the brew first came to light hundreds of years ago,
when explorers sampled it on the Indonesian isles of Java,
Sumatra and Sulawesi.
The monkey - known as the Palm Toddy Cat - lives on a diet of
alcoholic tree sap and coffee berries.
US-based food and drink critic Chris Rubin said: "Whether it's
because the intestinal juices give some special flavour or
because it eats only perfectly ripe berries, the Toddy Cat's
droppings produce what many say is the world's finest coffee."
Some exclusive US outlets sell Kopi Luwak for around a FIVER a
cup.
US Coffee supplier Mark Mountanos has snapped up 110 lb of the
beans. He said: "We've had interest from all over the world
because it is very hard to get hold of."
US coffee shop owner Richard Karno ordered a pound from Mark's
firm - but only after he convinced him it wasn't a joke.
He said: "It's the best coffee I've ever tasted. It smells
musty, but it roasts up real nice."

I laughed. “Wait - so there are actually monkeys trained to pick coffee beans?”
“Of course not. They are not trained. It is a natural phenomenon. They pick the fruit off
the tree and eat. That is how you get Monkey Coffee. Surely you have heard?”
Actually, I had read about this stuff. Monkey Coffee was something that had existed in the
19th Century, supposedly the best coffee in the world.
“So there really is such a thing?” I asked.
“It is a well known fact. I have read it is a delicacy in some countries.”
“Yes, yes. I’ve read that too. They say it is because the monkeys will pick only the best,
the ripest berries, right?”
“So some say. Others claim it is the chemical reaction within the bowels.”
“Bowels?”
“Yes. The monkeys eat the beans and then pass it through their digestive system. That is
the monkey coffee.”
“You mean it’s monkey, uh, feces?”
“As I have said, nobody drinks it here. They are unclean animals.” He wrinkled his nose.
“But it was a terrible problem in Shrevenoot. The monkeys ate all the best beans
I was never quite sure whether to believe all this until much later, back in the U.S.,
when I discovered that Monkey Coffee had recently became part of the gourmet coffee
roster. It does not come out of either a monkey or India, but is the product of a small
Indonesian creature called the Palm Toddy Cat , a nocturnal tree-lover who lives on the
naturally alcoholic tree sap used to make palm toddy (wine) and fresh coffee berries.
Whether it's because the animal's intestinal juices impart some special flavor (perhaps
because of its alcoholic diet) or merely because it eats only perfectly ripe berries, the
Toddy Cat’s droppings, cleaned, produce what many say is the world's finest coffee.
Japan buys most of the stuff nowadays, but the U.S. firm of M.P.Mountanos (800-229-1611)
also sells it under the name Kopi Luwak at about $300 a pound, making it the world's most
expensive cup of Joe. Another firm called Raven's Brew Coffee (ravencup@ptialaska.net or
800-91-RAVEN) sells it by the quarter pound for $75 and, in that grand American
tradition, throws in a free T-shirt showing the beast hard at work with a cup under its
ass and the caption "Good to the Last Dropping."

A colleague at work has mentioned that there is a coffee that is
special in that it is eaten by an animal, he knows not what, before
it is processed for human consumption.
Can anyone back up this claim?
-- Patrick Stephen Kavanagh
Yes, I can back this up. There is a type of nocturnal civet called the Luwak
that roams around in Indonesia and eats perfectly ripe coffee cherries. After
the coffee cherries pass through the Luwak's digestive system, the locals
collect the Luwak's droppings and wash them off, recovering the coffee beans
still encased in their protective endocarps. So passing through a Luwak's GI
tract is pretty similar to the initial phase of coffee-cherry processing --
the outer hull and fruit are pulped and removed. Then you just hull the
recovered beans and proceed as usual.
Luwak cofee is very hard to get a hold of on the world market, because the
annual production is miniscule, and not amenable to scaling by industrial
techniques -- you can't automate or train a nocturnal civet! And even if you
can find it, the price is sky-high. It's the coffee analog of hunting for
truffles with pigs.
Every time I tell someone about Luwak coffee, we have *exactly* the same
interaction (which is the same one I had when I was first told about it).
At some point in the story, when you explain how this Luwak eats only the
perfectly ripe coffee cherries, the listener gets this cautious look on
his face, and says (always the exact same words), "Are you telling me that..."
and the teller always nods and says, "Yes, that's exactly right. Roasted
cat-shit for $300/pound."
Were it myself, I would be marketing this stuff under the brand name, "Kacafe,"
but my venture capital friends just won't listen to me. I can't stop wondering
would I would use for a logo.
If you want to try this coffee, I do know of a US operation that imports and
roasts coffee, and is able to get Luwak coffee: J. Martinez & Co. Although
the bulk of their business is large-scale supply, they will sell to
individuals via mail order. I have also heard that their Atlanta store is in
Buckhead, and on certain days they will brew a pot of Luwak coffee in-house
and sell it by the cup.
Truth in advertising: I have never had an opportunity to try Luwak coffee,
so I can't tell you personally what it's like, but on my next trip to Atlanta
I am definitely going to try to go by the Martinez store and sample some.
However, I have friends who have had it, and they said it was fabulous.
The descriptions I recall were "very complex," "very distinct -- not like
anything else I've ever had," and "unique." One of my friends thought it
lived up to the price tag; another thought it was great, but given that
Blue Mountain coffee is merely a tenth the price...
I mail-order my (non-Luwak) coffee from the Martinezes, because it is pleasant
to deal with friendly experts, and the coffee is noticeably better than what I
can get where I live in Harvard Sq (Coffee Connection), so I do know their
business line: 800-642-5282. If you call and get a Jamaican accent, that's a
Martinez: Johns Jr. and Sr. and Melanie. They have always been very helpful to
me in ordering coffee, even in the tiny half-pound and pound purchases that I
make, and they are happy to talk about coffee. They also ship in those fancy
low-oxygen gas-valve bags. They do not sell vanilla-flavored raspberry coffee.
One more tip. I have noticed that whenever I call before 10 am, I always get a
friendly Atlantan on the phone, never a friendly Jamaican. The Martinezes
appear to be real night-cats. Like the Luwak.
