To date, my favorite all-around site would have to be Epicurious, and their
url is www.epicurious.com I think. I'll start compiling a list and get it
posted here soon.

To mark the final harvest of the 20th century, the Canned Food
Alliance is celebrating the nation's fruit and vegetable crops and
their swift journey from field to fork. As a salute to the harvesting
process, the Canned Food Alliance is offering new recipes online at
http://www.mealtime.org featuring a canned product from one of the
10 harvesting regions of North America.

Farmers across North America are operating at peak production as they
harvest their crops. For those fruits and vegetables that are
traveling a few miles down the road to a cannery, the harvest season
means being picked at the peak of ripeness and packed into a can
within hours of being harvested in the field.

Visit the Canned Food Alliance online at http://www.mealtime.org to
learn more about the harvest season, including:

- A map segmenting the various canning regions of North America and
the crops they harvest;

- An in-depth look at the step-by-step process of canning snap beans,
including images;

- A fact sheet explaining the history of the canning process; and

- A quiz to test your harvest savvy.

Enjoy the bounties of the season!

The mealtime.org Team

Ah - that might work for the juniper berry flavor. Which brings to mind a question my daughter-in-law posed when her sauerbrten recipe called for juniper berries and her shrubs were out of them. Might she have substituted gin for the berries or would that have given it a bitter taste from the alcohol burning off?

Not that I know of, and, if that is a worry, just flame the gin before adding it, or even add a little to the marinade.

Fantastic idea. I'll tell her. Gin smells wonderful. Much better than those tasteless and soul-less dried juniper berries she tried, though her sauerbraten was very good, indeed. As far as I am concerned you can keep the spaetzele. Mashed potatoes quickly replaced them on our menu but the red cabbage was wonderful and quite different from sauerkraut. Thanks for the suggetion !

Now I am hungry and there is a sleeper between me and the kitchen...

Of course Bay leaves remind you of California, and Winters (had Valentine's Day dinner there a year ago) and the most wonderful people on the planet. Iki has a little tree in his back yard and we harvest it regularly. Very nice aroma and flavor - almost a little sweet and very mild.

That does it. I have been hungry for brie for weeks and have resisted the costly and caloric treat. No longer. I will go out and get some ASAP. Even as I eat something entirely different and equally as tasty, I am wanting to taste only brie. Cheese is good stuff.

Thanks for the website. How well do things like soft cheeses such as brie ship from internet purveyors? I'd guess they do fairly well considering that I got frozen steaks from Omaha that way.

I'm having problems opening the cooking conference but I suspect the wizard working on it is causing it to load a bit more slowly. I'll keep trying. I'm delighted to watch the creation of a new conference by the man who made Geo such a success.

How is it different from other sites?

At SocialCookBook.com, the main tenet is ease of use. We strive to make our site as simple as possible, without all the useless bells and whistles you don't need.
So how does it work?

It's all about your chef rating. Your chef rating, measured in spatulas, improves with the amount of recipes you post, when your recipe gets favorably reviewed, or when you review someone else's recipe.

Hmm... I'm not sure I want to go to any of those places. I do have a question. This conference now takes "forever" to download just the new stuff because of the url boxes at the top. Does anyone else have this problem?

In re response #76:

As of 3rd June 2006 'Pimp My Snack' has changed its name to 'Pimp That Snack'
The page you were looking for has moved, and may now be available here
Why?

On the 17th May 2006 we received a letter from legal representatives of Viacom International Inc. advising us that they consider the use of 'Pimp My Snack' to be a breach of their trademark application number E4279493 which covers usage of the words 'Pimp My', and also E3992724 for 'Pimp My Ride'.

For full context and openness, we have made their letter available here:

Viacom Letter Page 1
Viacom Letter Page 2
Viacom Letter Page 3

While we are changing the name, this should not be taken as an admission of liability, trademark breach, or otherwise an acknowledgement of Viacom's argument. Merely that, in order to run our Snack Pimping website unimpeded, and to explore and advance new ideas, we need to do so without the threat of legal action hanging over us.

After all, this site is just for fun, and we strongly believe that it is the concept, simplistic design and enthusiasm of thousands of fans that have helped us become popular, and not the conjunction of a few common words in our name.

That said, we hope you continue to enjoy the website, and keep submitting those pimps! Any comments regarding this change should be directed to pimpdaddy@pimpthatsnack.com.

(for more, and all the appropriate links, you can still go to the url mentioned above...)

Maybe Viacom should start patrolling the streets for real pimps that are out there violating their trademark. It would be a big job, but it might keep them so busy they'd stay off the backs of more harmless "pimps".
