I was searching on the word "hurt" in the Middlemarch document at U of Virginia (see link on the conference front page) and found a number of other things I'd forgotten about.

We mortals, men and women, devour many a disappointment between breakfast and dinner-time; keep back the tears and look a little pale about the lips, and in answer to inquiries say, " Oh, nothing!" Pride helps us; and pride is not a bad thing when it only urges us to hide our own hurts -- not to hurt others.
Refers to Sir Chetham's recover over the loss of D as a possible mate and his quick transition to Celia.
He still cares about her all the way through the book, though, I think, though he realizes Celia is better suited to him.
