Topic 16 of 73: The Full Monty

Wed, Sep 24, 1997 (16:41) | Lorie Scafaro (LorieS)
Has anyone out there caught this gem of a movie? Very similar to "Brassed Off," but not as dark. This is one of the few movies I've seen lately that was satisfying on all levels. And my husband even agreed, despite his usual problem understanding British accents.

Haven't seen either of them I'm afraid. "Monty" as in Python?
I did see a very OLD movie last night -- 1940s "The Night of the Zombies"
Very typecast roles. 3 Stooges style!

Well, as to your question, maybe. The phrase "The Full Monty" means going totally nude, and the movie is about some out-of-work men who decide to try being strippers a la Chippendales to make some money.

So maybe Monty Python was referring to that phrase in a way that we out-of-touch Americans didn't understand?

This is a really funny movie. We took a group aged 16 to 40 and everyone
loved it. The dialog is hard to understand at first, but stick with it. It
is worth the trouble. Our local art film theater has held this film over
several times. A real fun time.

Rented it this weekend, and my mom & I both liked it. It took us about a half-hour to figure out the accents/slang, but from then on it was enjoyable. I was even tempted to re-watch the first part to see if I could get something more out of it! I didn't, but it's the thought that counts.

Yes! Great movie! Of course a natural hit with the gals, but let's be honest - good, clean fun for everyone!

Taught me as much about that region's Brit accent ("tosser"), as "The Commitments" did about the Irish language ("Fock", "Focker"). Recommended!

This is one of my all time fave comedies. There are some wonderful double takes in there worthy of a second and third viewing. I watched it on DVD and
wish I owned my very own copy.

My mother and I spent the first half-hour asking each other, "What did he say??" We couldn't understand a damn word for the accents, LOL!

'Tis a challenge. Helps if you've been around people like that, as well.
We have Aussie friends who can make noises just like they did and now I am beginning to make English out of them. Scary!
