Tue, Jan 13, 1998 (08:37) | Paul Terry Walhus (terry)
Steve Winwood, of Traffic fame, is one of my favorite musicians.
Why has it taken this long to create this topic? Anyway, let's talk
about Steve Winwood and the bands that he has been connected with over
the years.

The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys is, hands down, my favorite Winwood
Traffic album. Anyone heard it?

Well, I guess that's possible that someone hadn't heard it yet.
But hard to imagine, since it's my favorite album of all time.

Guess I'm more familiar with his 80's stuff, like Higher Love. (Did, however, know
that he was in Traffic)

ashamed to admit i've never heard it... know Traffic, John Barleycorn, and Mr. Fantasy, but not familiar with The Low Spark... according to the catologue, it was released circa '71, so it must've been previously unreleased material (?), because i thought both mason and stevie had left by then to do other things...
stevie, of course, recorded with clapton and ginger baker (blind faith, Blind Faith), and produced a couple of his most beautiful vocals, i thought, in "presence of the lord", and "can't find my way home"...
what songs are on The Low Spark...?

tell me about it, was just agog when they were on VH1. There still is a
connection between them two. Christy looked worn out. But those guys are
still good!

I agree (and you're talkin' Stevie, right?)
For some reason, can't think of male voices that I like, well John Malcovich *wink*

The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys
(Winwood/Capaldi)
If you see something that looks like a star
And it's shooting up out of the ground
And your head is spinning from a loud guitar
And you just can't escape from the sound
Don't worry too much, it'll happen to you
We were children once, playing with toys
And the thing that you're hearing is only the sound of
The low spark of high-heeled boys

The percentage you're paying is too high priced
While you're living beyond all your means
And the man in the suit has just bought a new car
From the profit he's made on your dreams
But today you just read that the man was shot dead
By a gun that didn't make any noise
But it wasn't the bullet that laid him to rest was
The low spark of high-heeled boys

If you had just a minute to breathe and they granted you one final wish
Would you ask for something like another chance?
Or something similar as this? Don't worry too much
It'll happen to you as sure as your sorrows are joys
And the thing that disturbs you is only the sound of
The low spark of high-heeled boys

If I gave you everything that I owned and asked for nothing in return
Would you do the same for me as I would for you?
Or take me for a ride, and strip me of everything including my pride
But spirit is something that no one destroys
And the sound that I'm hearing is only the sound
The low spark of high-heeled boys

know "rock and roll stew", of course (excellent song),
but not familiar with the rest... "the low spark of high-
heeled boys" sounds like a fascinating tune (they should
bottle that stuff- it could have industrial applications)...
i'll look for it next time i'm at waterloo...
since mason was gone, this must've been stevie's swan song?
or, since he obviously returned to the band after the blind
faith experiment, did he then stick to the end? never thought
about that, really (always just assumed the one meant the end
of the other), but with stevie gone, who in the hell COULD'VE
sung?

That's the one song that doesn't stick out in my mind.
I'll have to listen to it again.

Legendary rock drummer and Hall of Fame inductee Jim Capaldi died January 28th after a brief fight with stomach cancer. The 60-year-old Capaldi, born in England of Italian immigrant parents, died in his sleep at the London Clinic in the early hours with his wife and family at his bedside. Capaldi, whose driving rock rhythms and songwriting ability helped make groundbreaking band Traffic a household name in the 1960s and 70s with -- among others -- Steve Winwood and Dave Mason -- also had an illustrious solo career. Capaldi was inducted into the U.S. Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame in March 2004, just five months before being diagnosed with terminal cancer. When Traffic finally broke up in 1974 after releasing 11 albums, including the iconic songs 40,000 Headmen, Dear Mr Fantasy and Paper Sun, Capaldi was already doing solo work. Capaldi was already working on his 12th solo album when Winwood called him back to collaborate on a new album. One thing led to another and Traffic reformed in 1993 followed by a major fi
e-month tour of the United States in 1994, including appearing at Woodstock and playing alongside The Grateful Dead. In 1998, Capaldi teamed up with fellow Traffic founder Mason to tour again. Capaldi was five times winner of BMI or ASCAP awards for the most played songs in America and cooperated closely with Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Bob Marley, Carlos Santana and the Eagles among others. In 1975 he married Brazilian-born Aninha and spent much time with her helping the street children of her native country...
