(excellent list of songs, terry)

was always my impression that it's all rock and roll
(NOT rock&roll, rock'n'roll, etc...)
"rock" being a term used only by don kirschner, dick clark, others of that ilk...

As far as the music goes, I like the following: "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen;
"Touccatta" by Emerson, Lake, and Palmer; "Black Dog" by Led Zepplein; "American Pie" by Don Mclean; "Frankenstein" by The Edgar Winter Group; "Popcorn" by Hot Butter; "Sounds of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkel; and others, but this is a good start. Of course I like everything the beatles recorded including the stuff they did, under the influence, which was never released.

*What are the greatest rock and roll hits of all times?

I say Bo Diddley! Anything he had his hands on is the greatest rock of all times!

And it does him justice when they say "Bo put the ROCK in ROCK 'N' ROLL!" Yesterday I've listened to a jam session he'd played with Chuck Berry, recorded in March 1964. Wow, his guitar always blasts me away, makes me dance, and stomp, and shake, rattle and roll! Sing silly songs, shout serious shtuff, whatever - it's something one simply can't be indifferent to!

I agree with the VH1 poll that puts "Satisfaction" as the #1 rock & roll song of all time (i.e. the past 60 years)

Having heard "Stairway To Heaven", I cannot vouch for an eight-minute song that contains only three minutes of rock & roll.

I would not call much of what Simon and Garfunkel did "rock & roll". It was great, but it wasn't rock. S&G did some rock, including "The Big Bright Green Pleasure Machine", "A Simple Desultory Phillipic (Or How I Was Robert McNamara'd Into Submission)", "I Am A Rock", "Somewhere They Can't Find Me", "Keep The Customer Satisfied" and others, but they are more famous for their non-rock songs like "Scarborough Fair", "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "The Sound Of Silence", "The 59th Street Bridge Song", etc. However, I suppose "Mrs. Robinson" might be considered rock...

I guess I am too young to understand the impact of Elvis Presley, having been born a few months after the death of Jimi Hendrix. What's the big deal about Elvis? Not much to differentiate him from Buddy Holly et. al., especially since Holly wrote his own songs while Elvis got his from Lieber & Stoller.

Then again, those inundated with the likes of Vai, Van Halen, Bettencourt and Malmsteen might wonder what the big deal with Jimi Hendrix was. Nothing really, except that he completely changed the idea of what an electric guitar was supposed to sound like. Any Hendrix hit belongs in the pantheon, but Hey Joe was the first, The Wind Cries Mary, Manic Depression, House Burning Down and Little Wing stand out, and All Along The Watchtower is the perfect combination: Dylan's lyrics and Hendrix's playing; a pity they couldn't get a good singer to sing it...

'70s rock: "Born To Run", "Sweet Home Alabama", "Do You Feel Like We Do", "Hotel California".

'80s: ?

LISTENING TO BOB DYLAN IS LIKE LISTENING TO THE VOICE OF GOD
BOB DYLAN'S VOICE MAKES NEIL DIAMOND SOUND LIKE DINAH SHORE- ORDINARY AND OLD AND FOREVER TAINTED BY BURT REYNOLDS
BOB DYLAN HAS THE GIFT OF PERFECT ENUNCIATION
BOB DYLAN IS THE GREATEST SINGER THAT'S EVER LIVED

Jewel did a great, and very funny little bit on Dylan before she did a rendition of her mainstay song. She opened for him and he remembered something he told her years later. The song was "Satisfy my Soul" or at least these were the key words in the song.

"BOB DYLAN IS THE GREATEST SINGER THAT'S EVER LIVED"

This is an insult to truly great singers like Nat "King" Cole, Sarah Vaughn and Bill Medley.

Dylan's voice is WAY below these, down in the region of horrible with Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young and Michael Bolton.

I understand what you mean about enunciation, though. You can hear every word he SAYS. Just like the late Peter Tosh, another singer whose singing is not remarkable but whose lyrics are important and can be clearly heard in his songs.

The above link goes to the lyrics of "Satisfy My Soul" by Bob Marley (not Bob Dylan). I checked at the Dylan site and could not find any lyrics with "satisfy my soul" in them.

It's Jewel's song. Dylan just likes her and the song and she opened for him. She did a cool impersonation of Dylan. I never took notice of Jewel or liked her particularly till I saw this little bit.

It's actually "Who will save my soul"

Who Will Save Your Soul
People living their lives for you on TV.
They say they're better than you and you agree.
He says, "Hold my calls" from behind walls cold.
The Boss says, "Come here boy. There ain't nothin' for free."
Another doctor's bill, a lawyer's bill,
Another cute cheap thrill
You know you love him if you put him in your will but...

Who will save your souls when it comes to the flowers now
Who will save your souls after all the lies that you told, boy
Who will save your souls if you won't save your own?

We try to hustle them, try to bustle them, try to cuss them
The cops want someone to bust down on Orleans Avenue
Another day, another dollar, another war, another tower
Went up to where the homeless had their homes
So we pray to as many different gods as there are flowers
But we call religion our friend
We're so worried about saving our souls
Afraid that God will take his toll
That we forget to begin

Who will save your souls when it comes to the berries now
Who will save your souls after all the lies that you told, boy
Who will save your souls if you won't save your own?
La da de da...

Some are walking, some are talking, some are stalking their kill
Got social security, but that it doesn't pay your bills
There are addictions to feed and there are mouths to pay
So you bargain with the Devil, say you're o.k. for today,
You say that you love them, take their money and run
Say, it's been swell, sweetheart, but it was just one of those things
Those flings, those strings you've got to cut,
So get out on the streets, girls, and bust your butts.

Who will save your souls when it comes to it baby
Who will save your souls after all the lies that you told, boy
Who will save your souls if you won't save your own?
La da de da...

My favourite Dylan impersonation:

"Way down in the Black Hills of Dakota there lived a young boy named Rocky Raccoon,
One day his woman ran off with another guy,
Hit young Rocky in the eye,
Rocky didn't like that, he said 'I'm gonna git that boy!'
So one day he walks into town, books himself a room at the local saloon..."
from "Rocky Raccoon" by the Beatles

And then there's Simon & Garfunkel's "A Simple Desultory Phillipic (Or How I Was Robert McNamara'd Into Submission)" (first verse below):

"I been Norman Mailer'd, Maxwell Taylor'd,
I been John O'Hara's, McNamara'd,
I been Rollin' Stone'd & Beatle'd till I'm blind,
I been Ayn Rand-ed, nearly branded
A Communist 'cause I'm left-handed;
That's the hand I use, well, never mind."

Verse 2:

"I been Phil Spector'd, resurrected,
I been Lou Adler'd, Barry Sadler'd,
Well, I paid all the dues I want to pay;
And I learned the truth from Lenny Bruce

So I smoke a pint of tea a day!"

Break:

"I know a man whose brain's so small,
Couldn't think of nothin' at all,
Not the same as you 'r me!
He doesn't dig poetry;
He's so unhip, when you say 'Dylan'
He thinks you're talkin'bout Dylan Thomas,
Whoever he was.
The man ain't got no culture,
But it's alright, Ma,
Everybody loves your thunder!"

Andy Warhol, won't you please come home?

And I just discovered, somebody's tapped my phone!"

When I was a young boy (I think my father was still alive so I must have been five or six) I listened to the album Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme by Simon & Garfunkel and I thought "A Simple Desultory Phillipic" was a funny song. It was not until I found out about Dylan in my adult life that I realized that it was a parody of Dylan.

I also heard the song "Patterns" from the same album at the same young age and it was not until I heard Indian music in my teens that I realized that "Patterns" was based on Indian music...

Actually, I can remember thinking, "Who's Dylan Thomas" and, at a later stage, thinking "If not Dylan Thomas, then who is the singer talking about when he's talking about Dylan?"

The Who have ditched plans to tour this year after drummer Zak Starkey pulled out to work with Oasis. Starkey, son of Ringo Starr, has pledged to work with the Oasis until January 2006 - meaning Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend are unable to perform as The Who. Starkey - the latest replacement drummer the late Keith Moon - has been helping Oasis out since last year. Townshend, 59, says, "Shows we hoped to do in the summer seemed to fizzle and we lost our drummer to Oasis until January 2006. All the alternatives proposed, and which I have desperately considered, do not fit in with my current commitments. Sadly this forces a postponement of the planned Who activity for some indeterminate time." The Who have also issued a second blow for fans - they're delaying the release of their eagerly awaited album, which was to be their first in 20 years. Townshend says, "I had lots of plans but no hard schedule and unfortunately this is what has created this predicament... I work very slowly in the studio and either no
ne believed I was actually recording, or they got tired of waiting. Roger has done sketch vocals on several tracks and the results are very exciting, but I can't tour any more without a new record. I must hold my breath and live in hope..."
