I can't tell for sure, but are we enjoying
the appetizers now, stacey, or are we already
in the middle of the main course?

The other answer to this topic is
Eastside Cafe's Southwestern Caponata.

Z'Tejas Grill

Ararat, Hulas Hut and Saba Blue Water Cafe runners up.

Hon mention to Louies 106 Gilligans and Mars.

I'd have to say that Bahama Breeze is conspicuously absent, this place has *great* appetizers. Not to mention outrageous magueritas and food and a wonderful island atmosphere.

Z Tejas is fine, if you've got time to wait a couple of hours. It's hot, hot, hot among the trendy crowd that hangs down around West Sixth, me excepted of course.

I've been to Ararat and Hulas Hut, these are ok choices. But I didn't have any appetizers. Ararat has belly dancing and exotic music, and you can sit withing inches of the floor, indian style.

I noticed you liked the Hula Hut back a few years ago. All I can picture is plastic banana plants, paper crinkled flower leis and umbrellas in the drinks along with monkeys on cargo nets along the walls. Oh yes, we have them too - in the touristy places, but Hawaii is not quite like that - no monkeys and the plants are real.

Hula Hut is down on Town Lake, on a dock, and it's enscounced among
bookstores and trendy gift shops. Kind of a waterfront mini-mall. It's a
great place for a wedding.

Wow! I just remembered the last time I was there was for Melissa
Petrek's wedding, she wrote the awesome article in XL about the Spring
years back and was a very, very active and entertaining poster in GenX and
other topics. Then she met the guy from Marfa, got married and hasn't
been heard from since.

Hmmm! Mafia I know. Marfa is new to me. Sounds interesting - glad it is on the water, at least. No Banana trees? Bamboo? Monkeys? One of the appetizers back a few years at the beginning of this topic, William mentioned one which sounded very local Hawaiian and is very good here. We call them 'pupus' and it is pronounced just like you were afraid it might be *smile* Ours are sufficient for my dinner usually - then they call them "heavy pupus"

Topic 40 of 82 [restaurants]: appetizers
 Response 59 of 60: (sprin5) * Mon, May 22, 2000 (04:31) * 5 lines

I still say Bahama Breeze has the best appetizers in town. In my very limited repetoir of restaurants, it stands up there. I found this place by having a friend poke at the yellow pages with eyes shut.

It's a very "islandy" atmosphere and decor. A bit too trendy, but fun.

Pupus. Be afraid?

Topic 40 of 82 [restaurants]: appetizers
 Response 60 of 60: Marcia (MarciaH) * Mon, May 22, 2000 (14:03) * 1 lines

Nothing to fear from Pupus - either heavy or light - and such an assortment of ethnic goodies are represented. Lots of KimChee, picked Japan-style veggies, cheeses plus local style meats and veggie combos and luau stuff. Like I said, it more resembles a buffet table than appetizers. no room when you have had your fill at the pupu table. Lately, Pot stickers are a big favorite, and I love them!
