Topic 28 of 83: darts

Tue, Oct 1, 1996 (15:30) | Paul Terry Walhus (terry)
Why Darts? Because TJ asked for it. I guess getting the Notre Dame
topic wasn't enough! I think TJ is still pumped up from that game. Any,
darts, all I know is that it's lots of fun to play.

Yeah, I throw a couple times a week, typically at the Crown and Anchor...

Won a tight game of mouse last night on 4 bulls with 3 darts.

I'll try to fill in some good info on the local dart scene..... Leagues, Tournaments and such. Also probably a little trivia. Hope you all enjoy it.

Perfect games are fairly commonplace in Bowling. How frequently do ranked players hit a perfect game of cricket (8 darts)?

Anyone? I think my best game ever was in the low twenties.

Boyce, as cricket is only considered a competitive game in 6 of the 47 member countries of the World Dart Federation....Most of the top ranked players in the world don't practice or play the game on a regular basis. For the 6 contries that do recognize the game as competitive in competition. The U.S. is by far the highest calibre of player. Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark & Finland are the other 5. South Africa was talking about making it a competitive game in 1994, but from what I understand, the S
Dart Federation did not approve the measure. As for perfect games, I only know of about 20 total and they all belong to Top Calibre Americans with the exception of Dave Anderson from England who had one at the Dallas Internationl. I personally have only seen 2, both were shot against me 1 at the New Orleans Classic in 1987 and one at the Iceland International in 1991. My closest game is 9 knocking my first bull out of the board when I threw the second dart, then needed the third. If it holds true to
other darting records, you would probably be lucky to have 1 perfect game out of 10,000 games.

What is the regulation distance that players have to stand from the dartboard?

7'9 1/4" .....Seven Feet, Nine and One Quarter Inches.....
Length agreed upon by the WDF.......It is believed that the final number is an average of all the official lengths from the initial members of the WDF. Length used to be measured by beer barrels then beer cases. As not all barrels and cases were the same size from country to country, various lengths existed. Wales and Scotland use to throw from 8 feet, Some places in England was 7 while others were 7 1/2.. U.S. was from 6 feet in New England and New York while it was 7 1/2 in PA and NJ.....

Is there a similar story on the height? :)

Sorry that I have not been around in a while but, have had other things
come up. I really do not know the story on height, but I would venture
to say it is probably similar. A agreed upon or average of the member
countries. It is 5'8" to the center of the bull for the english style board.
Using a Widdy Board the height is 5'3" to the bull.

For those that live in Bastrop, There is a new NEW new dart league starting.
the Bastrop, Elgin, Smithville, Texas (B.E.S.T) Dart Association meets
every Thursday at 8:00 PM at the Old Tyme Tavern, downtown Bastrop. I think once there is enough players the league will be on Tuesdays????

Paul the average price is up somewhat from what I paid for mine in 1976.....But I would advise that you not pay less than $20.00 (ensure yourself some quality and a TUNGSTON barrel) 90% or 95% tungston is best.......but no more than $40.00......

And before I leave.......it is the dart that feels comfortable to you.......check out a few different shapes and size......GAS PIPE even has a practice board to throw at......and the one that feels most comfortable is the one for you..........
Also try to keep the weight between 19 to 23 grams.........that is the average weight for most players.........their are lighter and heavier darts but most players stay between 19 and 23.........
Shape and length of shafts and flights is simply a matter of personal taste.......
