Topic 50 of 111: ER

From Lise's GirlsOn.com review:

Lastly, I can't believe I'm going to say this, but that theme song is kick-ass. And I don't even care that George Clooney is leaving the show after next season; compared to the sad departure of Sherry Stringfield, this'll be a piece of cake. Plus, I've already heard that the role of Dr. Carter (Noah Wyle) will be beefed up, and he's always been one of my faves.

I've known a lot of nurses and doctors, and none of them watch this show, I wonder why? And I don't watch this show even though it's the highest rated show on tv, or was, until those stupid millionaire shows came along.

Heck - that's weird, Terry! When my roommate was an ER RN (she is now manager of the ER and Cardiac Unit) we had to watch each and every espiode of ER. And, as a result of her not being in my life anymore ER is not, either. Having spent many days with her as she went though the routine ER duties (they are NEVER routine!) I can vouch for the hours of boredom broken by moments of terror and adrenaline rushes as the ambulance pulls in. It is an incredibly extreme thing to do every day for work, and it changes the people who do it. Funny thing, but those who do it for a living are usually the most socially squeamish. Funny!!!

I have two friends who are nurses; one is addicted to it and the other can't take it--she prefers to be entertained when she's not working, not re-living her day.

We need to get Annette's take on this!

It could be that the ER RN I was visiting was trying to explain what they were doing and educating me rather than enjoying the show. I should think it would just be more stress after a stressful day!

The patient is in
By Robert Abele

The doctor is now the patient. Comedian Bob Newhart, who in the '70s
helped bring a broad legitimacy to the mental health profession as
America's favorite psychologist, Bob Hartley, on the sitcom "The Bob
Newhart Show," is returning to television Thursday — but this time it's
not for laughs. The 73-year-old master of the comedic pregnant pause
is taking on his first wholly dramatic role, as a suicide-minded
architect losing his sight due to macular degeneration, in a special
multi-episode stint on "ER."

But before the mild-mannered comedy legend can sit down for an
interview at the Warner Bros. lot where "ER" is filmed, a worshipfully
giddy Sherri Springfield — with whom he shares most of his scenes — has
corralled Newhart into signing videos and CDs of his stand-up act for
her relatives and friends. With a varied career that spans recording
success (his No. 1 comedy albums from the '60s), TV fame (two
long-running eponymous sitcoms), a drinking game ("Hi, Bob," after the
oft-repeated salutation from "The Bob Newhart Show") and many films,
including this year's "Legally Blonde 2" and the upcoming "Elf," it's
no wonder that Newhart fans can even be found sharing screen time with
him.

I remember watching "The Bob Newhart Show" back to back with "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" with my mother every week when I was a little girl. I can't wait to see him on ER tomorrow.
