Hi, Terry
You are so busy! Your name is behind so many topics? Do you do this full-time?
I am a CIS student and part-time instructor at a Jr. College here in Irving, TX. My previous life I was a nurse, did some sales, home taught my kids a couple of years and now I'm back at school. My short-term goal: AA in CIS, concentration: programming. My long-term goal: BA in Math--I would like to help in the dispelling of "Math Anxiety"...
Yesterday at North Lake College Computer lab, we received a call from a doctor (psychotherapist) who needed some help getting onto the web. I went to her home office this afternoon and ran into a snag...after installing Trumpet Winsock (Win 3.1), we got "Modem not responding"...but, I won't get into all the details here...just need to know what to do to help this person...
Terry, where should I post my problem? I have been surfing the 'net for months now, but have never participated in a new group, conference or chat...so be gentle! :-)
And, I have a few questions: first of all, can I change my "handle"? I would rather not use my real name...
Oh, how did I find you? By doing a search on "winsock", "modem" in the WebCrawler.
What does the bottom of the screen mean? "Redisplay starting from response number:"

Last question first. Redisplay from bottom of screen is cryptonerdtalk
for pick the number rnage of the responses you want to see. In other
words, if a topic had 31 responses and you only wanted to see 16-21 you
would type this in to that box.
As far as another name goes, just re-register.
The best place to ask would be in a topic labeled questionx or something
in this conference. If there isn't one, I'll create one. No, I don't
do this full time but I'm trying to pump a little life into this place by
setting the table and putting out the silverware for the guests.

Hello,

I'm a graduate of Eldorado College in their Computer Service & Installation Technician course. A+ certified. Had 29 years working with mainframe computers until November of 1995 when I was downsized out of the business. Looking for another nitch to fit into.

I good with computers so I'm looking for anything dealing with them. I reacently took my A+ test for techinicians and passed, with pretty good scores I might add. I've been fooling around with HTML and have my Home Page out on the Web. The Internet seems to be "hot" and I'm interested in that. I guess with the years that I have in the business I'm interested in gettting other people hooked on computers. I started with computers back in 1996. Worked for IBM at the time. Yet another novice here, I wanted to comment on MS FrontPage am I in the right area? My comment is that after 4-5 attempts to download from variuos sites, I finally received the software which died a dramatic death after two weeks (fatal errors on opening). Once again I tried to download 4-5 time, but recevied corrupt copies each time? Anyone else had any problems? I have just downloaded Hot Dog with no problems, I,ll see how I go. PS I checked the obvious virus, memory, etc..

Hi, I found your site through drake.dnet, my internet server here in North Carolina, was looking for a bull. board or a site to post seasonal rental not costing an arm and leg. I write poetry for a past time, periodically, must be my scottish heritage and am an artist, work in watercolors and acrylics, realism only. Was also looking for a site to go on web and have a web site for my art but have not found one yet that looks like it gets many hits and I have e mailed some of the artists listed and gotten

I'm not clear what you mean about posting a rental. Probably if
your're trying to rent something your local newsgroups would be the
most effective place. Will you post some snippets of your work, or
more, in our poetry conference? And perhaps post some of your vision
of art in our art conference?
If you plan on being a regular here, we'll give you a website. This

I got your e-mail. Somewhat belatedly, I realized I'd seen this site before as it is linked to Forrest Stroud's site.
I do webs for the University of Denver Campus Safety Department among others. I'm always interested in what other webmonsters...I mean masters are doing as well.
I started out with an IBM XT Clone and progressed through everything up to and including Windows 95 and the Pentium because I didn't know any better. Tried out the Mac Plus through PowerMac as well, but found the lack of threading frustrating when doing network stuff. "Insanely Great" became "Great Insanity" and I decided to concentrate on Windows stuff. Cartoon Operating Systems don't cut it unless they actually do something. It's astonishing that we're doing stuff on our desktops now that took a main
rame to do not so long ago.
I'm currently working on dynamic HTML and if I ever get it right, we'll be rockin' and rollin' with our databases on the web. Put it together with Windows CE and a radio modem and we might even be able to do reports while sitting in our cars or perambulating across campus. Beam me up, Scotty!

I got your email, too. Good promotion! Hope it works well for you. I found this site while researching message software for my site about Hawaii. Since I'm a real newbie to a lot of this, I'm pleased to find a place to ask questions, and maybe answer a few, but probably not in this section!
So, my first dumb question, which I'll try to answer myself -- how do I put links in messages? Is the URL enough http://hawaiilink.com or do I need html? Hawaii Link .
Sorry to bore you all, but that should answer it. And there's probably a manual I should have read already, right? If you're ever interested in Hawaii, that's where I've lived for the past nine years, and I've spent the last two answering people's questions, first on Compuserve, and now from my websites. Is this a good place to talk about website promotion? Or is it more intended toward development and authoring? Just trying to find my way around.

England, currently checking out all the forums online (I intend
to write an article on the topic) and thriving on online
companionship. I also spend a lot of time designing and

to searching) and Windows 95 help (including a complete

Am pleased to discover the Spring forums, and will include
them on the Guide to Online orums pages which I'll be posting
on Windweaver in June. But my interest isn't just
professional...I find that mailing lists, forums, and
OCCASIONALLY newsgroups are amazingly effective ways to
find kindred spirits on the Net, to have very growthful
and satisfying discussions, and to occasionally make
real substantial ongoing friendships. Look forward to

Glad you're joining us Tracy. Staci L. Stewart had started a psyche
conference on our original Spring and I'm thinking about regenerating
that on our new spring. It may seem a little sparse here right now
but that's because we archived about two years of our original posts
when we switched to our news software (Yapp. 3.0).
Where are you planning to publish the aforementioned article and
will you be able to post it online (or excerpts)? I'd definitely

Where the hell are they I don`t know?
and a nother problem:
Does any body have a program that allows to look at JPG pictures

I'm an avid surfer, well as much as the telephone charging system in the UK will allow me to (we pay per second!). I've been looking it up - honest! Do you reckon the 250mb is the way to go. i've seen one offer thgat give four disks as well, that'd give me a G of extra space. Can I use the zip drive like an extra hard drive? Should a parallel port one be OK. I don't have a super dooper machine.

OK, get a 250 MB one, because the price difference isn't really hot, and it's been developed later, so the tech behind ought to be more current state of the art.
You can use it like another hd, but there are speed limitations (a) by the drive, but more importantly, (b) by the parallel port. The SCSI versions are faster (but not as fast as a REAL hd), but for this, your PC would have to have a SCSI-adapter, which is unlikely. And upgrading with one just for this purpose is not economic, plus you could not easily connect a SCSI-Zip drive to somebody else's PC or notebook.
The cool thing about the parallel port Zip is, you can attach it easy, take it off and drag around. And with the 4 cartridges, you could use one to back up all important stuff you have, seal it in an envelope and store off-site (you never know...), have two for alternating daily (at least weekly!) backups of the stuff you work on, and one to use with this PC recovery software you can download from Iomega. That allows you - with one Zip and a floppy disk - to recover your configuration and operating system
should your PC break down and the OS be shot up. Things can happen, and they did to me.
There were some problems encountered with the 100 MB Zip drives (by me, too); these have never been reported of the newer 250 MB drives.
Another plus: If you want to show your work to your prof or a co-student, maybe a floppy is too small. Either they have this drive, too, or have a 100 MB Zip, so you could write to a 100 MB cartridge and give them that (supposedly downward compatible - but ask the sales person), or drag the kit over, plug in, start a small .exe (guest.exe ?) from a floppy, and have access to your data on their machine...
Great for taking stuff to a place with a laser printer, or to print colour graphics at a friends place!
But the most important thing is, you will be able to backup your work and mailfolders, and store one copy offsite. And if your installation breaks down, you could recover your configuration easy, and know the loss of work is only what you lost since your back-up.
And if you use some funky backup software, or - like I do - just use Winzip, you can even fit more than 250 MB on it. Winzip does a nice job compressing all stuff into one file (even does disk-spanning if one cartridge isn't big enough!), and you can even password-protect it.

I own two 100 MB Zip drives, one is a SCSI version connected to the Mac of a layouter, the other is a parallel port version on my PC.
If need be, I can also use it to swap large file to a portable computer. I use Zips a lot - most of the layouters I work with deliver their stuff on Zips, which I pass on to the print shop.
A typical in-office-use is dragging images I get mailed onto a Zip, and walk this over to the Mac for production. (Uh, still no network here...)

It's supposed to be a CD-RW drive with loads of software, easy to install. I'm not sure if it is only internal, or if they offer an external version, too. I think it's called ZipCD 650, or something like it.

i may sound like an alarmist and this is the wrong topic to post this in but, here goes nothing.....
please teach your children to be careful surfing the web. pedophiles and stalkers are out there and are blatant about what they want. with chat rooms being offered as free additions to websites, it's harder for "moderators" to control and report anything suspicious. i've removed the chat rooms from my site.

Wolfie - good point and make sure you post it on Porch where every one goes - like in "What do you want to talk about today" so more people see it. The web conference is not on many people's hotlist, I think - and this is important enough to get big attention. I cannot help thinking of those two girls who were lured to NYC and raped... How ghastly a price to pay for being friendly.

good point and it's done. (i saw a show about it last night and it got me upset)....i've spoken to teenagers via icq and chat rooms and have told them to be careful. of course, they come looking for excitement but don't realize that the folks on the other end are serious and have issues. didn't want to make chat rooms even more accessible for teenagers (since my site is for poetry and a lot of teenagers write and read). besides, i have a message board! and this is my favorite chat place anyway!! GO SPRING!!!!!
